A couple of years ago during my undergraduate years, I never knew that I will be in involved in the tech sector or taking up a technical role. At that point of time, I was studying Accounting and the subject itself was considered a struggle for me. It can be considered a little technical as it involves knowing the business terms and how the companies finances work. However, what I am doing today greatly differs from what I had imagined.

Current Situation

I have moved on from being an accountant to being a full-fledged data analyst and also became a data analytics/science instructor. Within just a few years after I made the transition, I went from being a newbie in coding and analytics to a level that I was qualified enough to be able to teach other people. I would never have thought that I was able to achieve what I have today.

How did I achieved this?

If I am going to tell you that this journey was easy, I will be lying to you. Like acquiring every other skillset, it requires determination, resilience and lots of patience. I spent many hours putting deliberate effort into learning concepts and performing hands-on coding exercises. When I first began coding, I spent at least an hour a day reviewing tutorials and watching online lectures.

My learning schedule

I have always believe in this Japanese philosophy known as ‘Kaizen’. This actually means continuous improvement and I commit myself to daily self-development. To me, improving yourself is like financial investment. You may heard of “compounding effect” by the famous investor, Warren Buffett. It applies to your learning journey as well. If you can improve 1% each day, you will get many times return by the end of the year. You would have acquired so much knowledge that you can be qualified as an expert in your field.

Expect obstacles along the way

Coding itself is a very difficult topic so you may stumbled some road blocks along the way. It can be very demoralizing when your code does not work and it took hours for your to figure out a solution. Do not be too hard yourself when this happens because it is a common scenario that many beginners faced. If you are not facing discomfort in this area, you are not experiencing growth. So don’t be too hard on yourself and try to enjoy the process

Final words

Growth is a long term process. Don’t expect instant results but rather enjoy the learning journey. Eventually you will be able to see the fruits of your hard work.
